Up on my soapbox. PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 09 June 2009 06:42

I debated with myself whether or not I should post this up here, instead of merely ranting to my close friends about it.  Obviously, I decided I should.

There have been a handful of times over the last three years where I have either walked in on, or been otherwise informed of someone in the main store in my sim, trash-talking me and my work.  I'm not talking about criticism, and certainly not the constructive kind, but more along the line of mockery, insults and name-calling.

What bothers me about it isn't that someone disagrees with the pricing of items or design decisions. Frankly, I don't design and build things with the goal of making something that everyone will love.  I think attempting to do so can result in nothing more than mediocrity.

However, being insulting and disrespectful in the middle of someone's place of business is just rude.  I find it hard to imagine that anyone was raised to believe it was an acceptable behaviour, but I've been surprised before.  Personally, I've been to stores in SL where I looked around and thought, "What utter crap."  I would not dream of turning to someone in that store and saying that out in the open.  Perhaps by IM, but I feel no need to put down someone's work when I can simply go elsewhere.

Really, it's about respect and being able to understand that not everyone sees the world as you do, and thus not everyone will make decisions with which you agree.  If you think your ideas are better, then go make it happen.  The Omega Concern came to be because I followed precisely that philosophy.

Omicron 1.5 and 2.0 PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 07 June 2009 17:04

A brief update for those of you who read. ;)

I have some concerns about server version 1.27 which is coming to SL in the not distant future, and LL's stated plan to bring with it new ways of measuring and limiting sim-resource hogging scripts by a per parcel and per avatar basis.  For content creators, we've yet to receive any tools to measure how our products weigh in on ths new scale, or even any concrete idea of what this scale may be.

Because of this uncertainty, I'm delaying Omi 2.0.  The good news is, Omicron 1.5 will be pouring out across the grid very shortly.  Alas, it's not much in the way of new features, but it has had its script and prim count reduced by about a third, which will help with asset server lag causing it to detach on login or during TPs.  It has also been compiled under mono with seemingly no ill-effects.  Things that no longer work under Havok 4 have been removed, but "works somewhat like" solutions are in place.  Teleporting and all things that move around including sim scan probes go to 4096 meters.

That's the short of it, there will be a notecard better explaining the changes from 1.4 to 1.5 when it's released.

Cheers!

I've gotten a little surge of people asking me about the state of the Omicron, so I wanted to post something about that, simply to keep from having to repeat myself. ;)
